Hi! Here is a little information for you to get to know me both as a person and educator.

For the past year I have been studying for a Master's degree in philosophy at Sheffield, and for the next year I will remain here while I tutor and apply to PhD courses. Prior to Sheffield I was a philosophy undergraduate at Cambridge (Robinson College). Before that I studied for my A Levels in my hometown, a little north of Bristol.

I spend a good deal of my time reading or discussing philosophy, and being nosey about the lives of various philosophers - I'm a sucker for a silly anecdote.

Outside of philosophy, I run, play pool (well enough to beat my friends), and darts (well enough not to be consistently beaten). I also like frequenting local coffee shops, eating tasty food, and travelling.

Education & Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy

University of Cambridge

Philosophy was far from easy for me to begin with. I know the troubles of getting your head around complex concepts and arguments, and then transferring this into a well-crafted essay - a 1st class essay began to seem like a mythical creature I'd never see. By the end though, I achieved a 1st in third year, ranking 6th in my year. This experience translates into my being a compassionate as well as knowledgeable tutor.

Master's Degree in Philosophy

University of Sheffield

My Master's degree (predicted +80% average, a high distinction) has equipped me with a much deeper understanding of specific areas of philosophy while also developing my capacities as a communicator. This enables me to push advanced philosophy students much further, and convey complex ideas in all of my subjects more carefully and effectively.

A Levels: Psychology, Physics, Maths and AS Further Maths

I achieved three A*s in my A Levels and an A in further maths. This puts me in a strong position to tutor GCSE to A Level in all of these subjects. Moreover, I have since conducted a serious study of the syllabus and mark schemes in the various subjects, so I'm even more well-equipped to tutor students in these areas.

Skills & Experience

When I was an undergraduate at Robinson, I volunteered as the student Access Officer. In this role, I worked closely with the School's Liaison Officer to communicate information about Oxbridge to prospective applicants. This involved visiting schools, touring groups of young people around the college grounds, and running outreach events in college. These experiences help to make me a friendly educator who is familiar with working with young people.

Since being a postgraduate, I have volunteered as a student marker and as an undergraduate helper. I here gained experience closely reading the work of students, determining how it could be improved, where the student has gaps in their understanding, and how best to communicate these two things to the student respectfully and effectively.

I also have much experience communicating complex ideas, as philosophy is a subject which demands as much if you are to do it well. My years of experience makes me a clear and coherent communicator, ready to teach.

Finally, I'm incredibly passionate about being a good tutor. I want to see students improving, expanding the opportunities available to them, and developing an intrinsic interest in their subjects!
